Winning bidder can't pay

Grrr! Daughter sold laptop on e-bay to bidder who asked numerous questions (but with only 2 FB). The auction ended @ 1hr ago and he has now e-mailed to say he has no money to pay - as he has to pay his student rent!!!!

Would the easiest thing be to mutually cancel the transaction and offer to the 2nd highest bidder?

depends if you are happy to take the lower amount, but to be honest I would NPB his !!! because he needs to learn that he can't bid and run.

Must admit the NPB was my preferred route, but as the runner up bid was only £10 less and with lots of pos FB I thought it might be quicker than having to wait for a NPB dispute to close.

Can I send a 2nd chance offer to the runner up bidder, before the mutual cancellation is closed?

It may be the easiest to do a mutual,IF they accept you get your fees back,IF they don't you pay fees.
Better to wait 4 days, open a non-paying-bidder case(NPB),close it 4 days later, get your fees back and your free to relist or try 2nd chance offer, buyer gets a strike and once they do it again they've basically banished their buying days from ebay for quite a while(better for us sellers)

I thought if they don't respond to the cancellation within 7 days, I still got a refund of fees? If they don't accept the cancellation, can I then not start a NPB?

I could never bid on something if I couldn't pay.

It's a pity you can't neg them as that would look really bad with only 2 feedback.

Hmm..not so sure about the fees bit. Thing is your talking about having to wait 7 days..it only takes 8 days to NPB and def get your fees back plus give them a strike. If you go your way you could be looking at over 2 weeks.Just NPB them,if they can't pay they shouldn't have bid in the first place..their problem..not yours

Yeah it's a shame sellers can't neg any more - from reading some of the threads it seems NPB's are becoming more common.

I think I'll look into a NPB for this 'buyer'!

If you offer a mutual cancellation & they refuse as my last NPB did you're stuffed you don't get your FVF's back. Unless you need the money urgently I would go down the NPB route but that will be 8 days before you can re-offer it & by then the under bidder will no doubt have bought another one.

Hermum is correct, but if you offer a mutual and they fail to respond (not a refusal) then after 7 days it times out and you can close it for a fee refund.

I do not risk mutuals if i want my FVFs back. If a buyer is too stupid to realise he can't afford something then I doubt he has enough brain cells to opt for the right bit when asked about a mutual. There is also the possibility that he is an auction wrecker and is doing it for fun so he can just refuse.

    Go for a full NPB.
