Child tax credit - Does the total income mean salary after or before tax?

Hi,
Just trying to work out if we're entitled to any Child Tax Credits.
HMRC website asks the following question:
Was your total income more than £58,000 between 6 April 2009 and 5 April 2010?
Is this income before or after tax has been paid?
