Caling somebody, but after 2 rings it goes to answer phone? Why not at least 6-7rings

I rang somebody the other day, when I have rang them before.

They are an office worker.

When I rang them before, and they have not been there, the phone rings 7-8 times, and then to his Answer phone Recorded message.

When I rang him yesterday, the same happened, 7-8 rings, and no answer, and straight to answer phone recorded message - they were NOT at the office.

But 2 hours later when i tried, it just rang 2 times (2 rings), and then went to his answer phone recorded message. I kept trying and the same was happening.

What is happening therE? has he put it on a new setting?

I tried for around 2 hours, so they cant be engaged or else it wouldnt even ring 2 times, or would go straight to answerphone which it didnt do.

Maybe, or maybe he didn't want to take the call or hear it ring out and switched it to ansaphone after 2 rings

Mine at home does that - first call, lots of rings.

2nd or subsequent call IF THE FIRST CALL NOT BEEN PICKED UP & ANSWERING MACHINE THEREFORE NOT RESET - 2 rings.

It means no-one's there / picked up earlier messages.

It's called 'toll saver' and means that if the answering machine owner phones home to check for messages remotely, they can tell after the first 2 rings that there are no new messages waiting, and can hang up without having to pay for the call.
