They are worthless shares because cost of the debt servicing (debt was short term financed, a long term 10yr loan might have worked) exceeded operating profits available to finance it I think.

Government can operate bb at a profit I think most likely because they have the lowest cost of debt in the country hence its within their power to keep the business running however that gives no rights to previous owners to the current operation or its revenue

Thats my guess where all the money went. Something similar is the recent Lehman case suing Barclays for acquiring their insolvent business too cheaply, the judge ruled in favour of the buyers of the debt/assets.

However Im not sure if Lehman will be able to pay any return to its shareholders or maybe it all goes to the creditors. I think thats most likely ditto BB
