  • Nothing if you tell them and the holiday is within the UK. If its outside you will need to tell them and reclaim when you come back

You must fill in a form before you go (if in GB) to say the dates you will be away and where you are staying, plus confirm if you are willing and able to return to take up a job opportunity. You can be excused jobsearch while you're away for no more than 2 benefit weeks in a year, but you must still be available for work. You will have to attend the jobcentre on the first day after you get back and if your signing day falls during your holiday you will be paid after you get back and have signed on.

As Mr FS says you cannot get JSA if you are going abroad on holiday

The amount of Jobseekers who get this wrong amazes me

There is no limit to the length of holiday a JSA claimant can take so long as they are actively seeking and would be willing to return if asked. They wouldn't be paid any JSA until they return from holiday to sign, when they would be paid backpay.

(I was told of the two-week limit but 'guidance notes' proved this was wrong)

Hi, are the guidance notes online?

http://www.dwp.gov.uk/publications/specialist-guides/decision-makers-guide/ - perhaps - I haven't looked into this aspect, as I'm neither on JSA, or likely to take a holiday. Somewhat verbose, but really useful!

The guidance notes are attached to the holiday form you fill in before you go. In my post I referred to 2 weeks as being the maximum period that a jobseeker can be treated as seeking work ie if you do not want to look for work while you are away, I did not mean you can only go away for 2 weeks (which is a common mistake, though not one I have ever made)

I wasn't contradicting you Cassie, I was just elaborating. Your post was spot on.
