Car-firm wants credit card for deposit month in advance

Ahoy-hoy.
Have booked a car for a day in San Francisco and part of the deal includes a $500 deposit charged to a credit card when I collect and refunded when I return. Fair enough.
What seems slightly odd is that the firm is asking for the CC number now in order to cement the booking. The booking is July 15th.
I'm happy to pay the hire charge but, surely, they shouldn't need my CC number until I collect. Seems like I could be open to either an early charge (incurring the associated interest) or else a potential victim to unscrupulous traders.
Thoughts?

Reviews seemed very positive, certainly far better than any other hire place I checked out in Frisco.

No-one? Sorry to bump but I'm not really sure where else to find out if this is standard practice without booking cars with other hire companies!
