Midwifery after Nursing

Can anyone out there answer me a question.

I am a 3rd Yr Nursing Student who will hopefully qualify and get put on the register in Jan 2012, but I actually want to be a Midwife so am hoping to apply to do the shortened course in 2012 - thus becoming registerd for that in 2014

Anyway the thing that is troubling me is finances. I know I haven't got a place yet, heck I haven't even qualified yet! But what sort of financial aid is there out there for me - I won't be able to apply for the bursary and am not sure that a student loan will be available as I am a discharged bankrupt. Obviously everything in this world boils down to money. I have a hubby and 2 daughters.

Thanks for any advice.

Economy; careful management; providence. Whether you call it thrifty or frugality it all comes down to getting more for your money.

    Hi

I am not sure where you are in the country, but I know a little about Nottingham uni midwifery conversion/top up from having looked into it myself.

As you will already be a registered nurse, when you apply for the course you receive funding which is a pro rata of the band 5 staff nurse wage over the 80 weeks of the course, for which you receive a contract of employment. This is not paid for by a particular ward or employer, but is sorted via the Trust where you will do your placements itself. The univeristy help you through the application process should you be accepted for the course.

However I believe you already have to have one year's post-reg nursing experience and pass biology/maths papers and a formal interview to be accepted to the course.

Sorry it's so specific to Notts but hopefully this is the case across the Uk

My wife is currently in Manchester studying midwifery. She did an access course to get her there and was told that the midwife top-up courses are stopping. Her only option was straight into a midwifery degree and not nursing then top-up because it wouldn't be available.

Might be worth you checking this out in your area. Otherwise you will be looking at repeating your degree in midwifery.
