Direct debit cancelled

I paid my Virgin CC (MBNA) bill in full before statement date and cancelled the DD that was set as back up for minimum payment.

I was charged a failed DD fee of £12 for a card with a zero balance!

One fairly complicated phone call got the charge reversed but I just thought it was odd.

You need to advise MBNA that you're cancelling the DD not just the bank.

Ah well, lesson learned and thankfully it didn't cost you anything this time either :o

    All good

I assume you mean before it's payment due date?

Once the statement has been produced the DD is set in stone unless you contact them. From your DDI confirmation letter...
Important: Confirmation the set-up of your Direct Debit Instruction

Once your Direct Debit is in place, any extra payments you make will not affect the amount we collect unless you contact us at least five working days before the payment due date. Please note that working days do not include Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holidays.
I believe there's also a message to that effect now on their statements (probably due to the number of people falling foul of it).

    Yes, there is!
Please remember: your regular Direct Debit payment will always be taken, regardless of any additional payments you choose to make.

I didn't have paper statements and had only used the card for a balance transfer. Never mind I know now and yes it was payment date I paid before.

I also have an M&s card and if I pay this then the DD I have set up isn't activated so I suppose I thought they were all the same. I only have the DDs for minimum payment just in case I forget.
