Just bought a Humax box - and I think we have been ripped off

After weeks of research about purchasing a HDD DVD recorder, we decided to go for a PVR and bought a HUMAX. We already have the basic Sky package which isn't far off Freeview. So we have managed to work out that with the Humax, we can record 2 freeview channels at the same time and watch another channel on our Sky - great!!
Then my husband mentioned we look into getting a top up card - the Humax has a slot and,a s the top up is only about £10 per month that we could get rid of Sky altogether (which costs us £21 per month).

So..... I have just looked into this on the internet and found out that Top Up TV is being replaced Nov/Dec 06 by Top Up TV anytime which you have to purchase a set top box for £180, it has 160gb hard disk and basically does everything the Humax does!! But with this box being released you can upgrade your Freeview to top up with the extra channels - we won't be able to do that on the Humax - it states on the website tha the only option to use top up tv is to buy the new box!!
So, have we just been ripped off?? We have just spent £199 on the Humax with the top up slot that we can't use and we cant have any other channels now other than the basic freeview!!
My husband reckons we should take it back and say we have been misold this humax box.
Is anyone else in the same predicament? Can anyone please advise?

Thanks

  • Im venting at the people behind Top Up TV more than anything else - seems rubbish that I have just bought the Humax with the Top Up TV card slot in it and I can't use it.
Looking at the site, the Top Up TV anytime box seems to do everything the Humax does but us £20 cheaper - having said that, its not out yet so, I dont know how good its going to be - at least the Humax has a really god reputation

  • If the shop claimed the Humax was suitable for use with Top-Up TV I think you would have a case for returning it. It is reasonable to expect a shop selling PVR's to know about the Top Up TV changes.

Most of the Top up TV channels are only on for a few hours each day. They all share the same bandwidth. It's really not worth the money!

And sorry to say this has been known about for quite some time - it's been months since I heard they were going to do it so the shops might not be all that sympathetic about giving you your money back.:(
