Buy it now buyers who don't pay up...

I've had two of these recently and it really makes me mad. Why would anyone press buy it now and then not pay? My latest has even emailed me about the address to send the item to, but SHE STILL HASN'T BOTHERED TO PAY!! I can open an unpaid item case after 4 days- am I harsh to do it at the earliest time possible?!

New buyer with 0 feedback but friendly enough in her email...

  • ebay is rubbish, why they can't have automatic payments, paypal is an ebay company, its a shame they aren't linked

click on buy it now and it should take you through to paypal to complete, when payment is sent the buy it now completes, otherwise buy it now fails
we wouldn't have this issue then simples..
  • You can make this happen by making your listings 'immediate payment required'.

It does that, but only if the seller lists it correctly.
  • I tried to do that a few months ago but I had to be a business seller... Maybe the rules have changed now.

You can set listings to immediate payment by Paypal but it means you cant offer postage discounts for multiple items purchased.

We send an automated payment reminder after 2 days then file the unpaid item case after 4 days. A few years back people would reply to the case with twaddle such as 'Ive sent you a cheque if you have not received it that isnt my fault' or 'Its not allowing me to pay by Paypal' but these days no one seems to respond to the unpaid item dispute and we can then close it after a few days and get our fees back.

It isnt just buy it nows though. I sold some private stuff on a seperate ID last week on an auction. I sent him the invoice, he replied asking a spurious question about the item he could have asked in advance, I replied confirming the item was exactly as described, then no response at all and I can see he has bought an alternative similar item the following day. Timewaster.

Ebay must love this unpaid item system as in many case people cant be bothered to go through the full process to recover their fees.

Update: 4th March. Emailed buyer to ask if he would be making payment after 4 days had gone by and I could see he had bought an alternative item from someone else. He replied saying eBay wasnt allowing him to pay for it and did I know why. I replied saying I didnt know but advised he contact eBay to get help. No response. I opened an unpaid item dispute and he emailed to say still having trouble paying and could I cancel. Ignored him and closed the case after no response to the actual dispute. All this effort and 10 days wasted and all he gets is a strike.

To be fair, I know someone who is very new to ebay, and they took a while to grasp the whole paying with paypal bit, so it's quite feasible that they've clicked the BIN, and assumed that the payment bit is done automatically.

Some people just get so blinded by the whole ebay thing, it's easy to get it wrong!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • They will more than likely pay just before the NPB dispute then immediately send you an email regarding their item not being received :)

I've had to open three cases in the last few days where people haven't paid, why bid/BIN if you don't intend to pay?!

There are reasonable explanations as outlined here - one explanation I think is relevant is that so many sites nowadays have "one-click" purchasing facilities that some new buyers think eBay is the same. I'm quite happy to do disputes, but I think anything other than mild frustration is a bit silly - you know that eBay gives buyers the ability to buy now and pay slightly later, so it's going to happen whatever you do about it.

It's a shame if eBay have restricted immediate payment on BIN items to business sellers only, that's a retrograde step in my opinion as I used it very successfully while there was an auction wrecker stalking people on the community boards a few years ago, but it's an occupational hazard - not something I get overly worked up about.
