Car Insurance - 3rd Party only, limited Mileage

Hi

I live in Greater London and would like to change the way I use my car. At the moment, insurance costs me and my wife £800 a year. She is 22 with 2 years NCB and I am 24, and we are insured for 6000 miles a year. The price of the insurance means that we use the car as often as we can to make it worth the cost

What I want to do is insure the car with limited mileage third party only insurance - with perhaps up to 1000 miles a year - and only use the car on special occasions.

My logic is that as I will be travelling one sixth of the distance, insurance should be one sixth of the price. But it doesn't seem to work like that.

Can anyone advise me on where I can get reasonably priced third party only insurance? I mean, it should be the cheapest option.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Jonathan

    Have you considered alternative transport?
£800 will go quite a long way in terms of tube/bus/train fares with the occasional taxi/hire car.
Also look at car clubs where you share a car.

I haven't had my own car for nearly 2 years now. We went from 2 to 1.
I realise that going from 1 to 0 is different, but you need to add up:

depreciation, tax, insurance, mot, servicing, repairs, parking charges, breakdown cover

and then work out whether you can realistically do without the car given that the above money (for most people this is well into 4 figures) you can afford to get taxis/hire cars occasionally for when public transport doesn't fit the bill.
My car costs used to be £1400 annually but that was very low because I had an old banger with very little depreciation and at 42 my insurance was £150 as well. Most people would spend a few grand a year and if they did the maths would be shocked.

Obviously it depends on whether you have buses/trains/tubes nearby but if you are not disabled you can consider cycling or walking a few miles. I've been a lot fitter and a bit slimmer since I now walk to the shops.
