A group of us (6 adults, 1 child, 2 toddlers) are planning on going to Devon for a week in April 2007 (after Easter). The accomodation has already been booked, spacious well equiped self catering house in Torquay. I am looking for recomendations of things to see and do in the area, especially some of the treasures which are only usually known about by the locals.

Will you have transport whilst there? The one place I can recommend is Totnes. It is a charming town with some lovely places like the Cider factory and aceramics centre where kids can paint their own eg cups or bowls and they will fire them too if you want - it is called China Blue and has a lovely cafe (not dear) and a superb gift shop. Dartmouth is a must if you've never been as it is so pretty. You'll have a lovely time.:T0

Heya I live in Devon so if you hear of anything and want an opinion feel free. Things like woodlands and crealy will always be good for the kids but not sure thats the sort of things your looking for. Will have a think!I've just started entering the competitions (July 07). When I win I'll update this signature. Look on the bright side, I shouldn't have to update it very often.0

Lawtz04, thank you for your suggestions. Yes we will have our cars with us, I think we are also planning to take our bikes and childrens seats/tagalong/trailer. Can anybody recomend any cycle routes which are either on quite roads or off road to cycle as a group and secondly anywhere which would be good for the 2 moutain bikers to go.

If you're not a member of the national trust - join up....
We went down to the Devon/Cornwall area last summer and ended spending a small fortune of car parking, as all the beaches and most tourist attratctions we visited seem to have a national trust man in a hut charging about £3 per car to park up.0 -
We are members of the National Trust for Scotland. Thanks for the tip, will need to remeber to fit window sticker to car, I'll try to do it this weekend.Fashion on a ration 2025 0/66 coupons spent

Thank you for your offer of assistance.
I'm looking for a wide range of things to do and see as well as places to eat (breakfast, lunch, dinner or afternoon tea
) so we have a choice depending on the weather, peoples moods or inclination.

bantham beach is great, little way from torquay.http://www.familyholidaysouthwest.co.uk/main/en/att-provider-10506.html
never liked torquay very much, not much to do and not a great beach.
paignton zoo http://www.paigntonzoo.org.uk/ is worth a visit,
kents cavern http://www.kents-cavern.co.uk/ is not bad.
cardew pottery http://www.craftsatcardew.co.uk/tourist_attraction.php and the house of marbles http://www.houseofmarbles.com/portal1.htm at bovey tracey are worth a look (and are both free)
trago mills shopping center at newton abbot has some good cheap shopping. http://www.trago.co.uk/WWSD(what would Scooby Doo)0 -
we went to kents cavern - not worth the entrance fee

and to tell you the truth I don't think it's worth staying in Torquay for more than a weekend. There isn't that much to do there0 -
ive lived about 7 miles away for 43 years and ive only ever been on the beach onceWWSD(what would Scooby Doo)0

Our children loved crabbing at Brixham when they were little. You can buy the fishing lines for less than £1 at the shops on the harbour, and bait is a few pennies. You don't need hooks or any special technique...just sling a bacon-baited line over the harbour wall and the crabs just hang on. The fun is trying to pull the line up before the crabs fall off!0
