Amex - Personal Info request

I have had an Amex card for a number of years but have now been told I must send in copies of my passport page or driving licence and also a copy of a bank, building society or utility bill. I have been told by Amex that this is a legal requirement without which i can no longer have an account/card with them. Can anyone tell me is this true? Obviously i would not like to send off my personal details when it is not legally required.

I don't see how it can be a legal requirement to show documents that you may not even possess - not everyone drives or travels abroad.

However, I believe that Money Laundering legislation that has been introduced since you first took out your card has imposed a general legal requirement on financial instituitions to take appropriate steps to verify your identity.

Yes it's true - not sure if it's a legal requirement but they closed my account because I didn't reply to them about this.

(Never mind the fact that they sent it to the address I'd moved from 2 months earlier and had informed them of - I only found out because it's a corporate card and our corporate card manager emailed me about it)
Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard
