First time Prague.... HELP!!

Hi all...
I am off to Prague with my OH - xmas suprise as she has always wanted to go to the markets!!
We are staying in Andels hotel which I found by meandering through Trip Advisor comments..
Is there any good places near by to eat/drink? is it in a good location for sightseeing etc - any must do's and dont's?? Do they have a tour bus - big red bus kind of thing?? What boat trip would you reccomend...
On a bit of a budget so nothing to outlandish..
Any advice would be smashing!!
Thanks a million and have a wonderful day out there...;)

  • Don't really know about sites in the town centre (the statues on the bridge are cool though) but this place http://www.ludd.luth.se/~silver_p/kutna.html is definitely worth a vist - about 40 minute/50p train journey each way (at least it was when I was last there about 5 years ago).
  • There are no tourist buses.. buses are banned in the city centre. We did go on a 'train bus' which was quite odd and fun. You can use the underground/trams pretty easy although if you like walking, the city isn't too big and you can cross it in under an hour.

Do a search, there are several threads on prague already

I second this - was over 3 years ago I went..
  • Hi,
there is an underground station and a shopping center with bar restaurants etc. just out of your hotel, the name of the underground station is Andel so you can't be confused, it's on the B line, so at the airport try to get the bus that goes to a station on that line (check the information leaflet you get at the booth of the transport company in the terminal building where you can buy also tickets and passes for 3 or 7 days). From your hotel you can walk to Mozart's villa, it's called Villa Bertramka and it's just round the corner from the Hotel Moevenpick, a little uphill.
There are plenty of tips on transport and other suggestions on the other thread in this forum, so give a look there.

Just wanted to say have a fab time - we went for Christmas a couple of years ago, it was beautiful. It is also really easy to convince yourself that it is fine to be drinking mulled wine at 10 in the morning as you wander around. It keeps you warm!

My husband has been working in Prague for almost six years and you will find that prices have gone up a lot in that time, especially since Czech Republic joined the EU.

You can do city and Castle tours with Martin Tours. You will see their kiosks all around Old Town Square area.

It is easy to use the metro from Andel. Trains are cheap, clean, efficent and frequent. Buy a pass at the airport for the best value. You can buy 3, 7 and 15 day passes. The passes are valid on the metro and the trams so it makes getting around really easy. You will need to use public transport from Andel into the city. It is walkable and I have walked it many times but not twice a day!

In Andel itself. try Jet Set restaurant directly opposite Village Cinemas. I also like Corte D'Angelo which is just across from the tram stop on the main road. There is a big shopping mall in Andel and two multi plex cinemas which are way cheaper than the UK. I am going to see the new James Bond there this week-end.

Food and drink are reasonable as long as you avoid the big tourist traps in Old Town Square and especially the Irish and British pubs.

My big advice for Prague would be comfortable shoes. You will do lots of walking. In the winter months you need warm clothing, preferably layers. You may well need a hat too but you can easily buy one when you are there. They are well geared up for cold weather and all bars and restaurants are warm and cosy. If it snows, they have it cleared up really quickly. Prague looks even more magical in the snow.

    Enjoy.
  • def pack warm clothes as it is freezing this time of year i went last november for a stag weekend it was ok but didnt see much of the sights because was sleeping the hangover!

You don't need a tour bus. See most of the city from a No 22 tram, just do the whole journey, getting off where appropriate. It takes a spectacular route up past the castle from outside Malostranska Metro station.

On arrival get a 3 or 7 day ticket from the kiosk in the airport (220 or 280 Kr) and validate it when you get on the 119 bus outside. Take this to Dejvicka metro stop, then take the train to Mustek, changing to the yellow line for Andel. Transport is so simple, and it's frequent too.

I would recommend one restaurant for certain, Rodinny at Nerudova 213/18. They do a superb meal for two, including wine, for 990Kr all in. Exceptional value and a very friendly proprietor too. (Nerudova has lots of restaurants and bars to suit all pockets.)
