You have to claim off the Insurance that was valid at the time. You won't get away with asking your own Car Insurers to add temporary cover for the hire car and then claiming on that. I doubt the hire car company would allow you to Insure the car separately and if you tried to claim off your Car Insurers after making a recent change, it will probably picked up anyway.
In addition (if you got away with it) you may find that your Car Insurance premium increases for a few years due to the windscreen claim, so you would end up not saving any money from a dodgy manouever.
Edit. Depending on the crack and position, they might opt to repair, rather than replace. Check whether they can repair first of all.The comments I post are personal opinion. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0 -
any involvement of insurance companies is going to cost you long term, probably the best idea is to ring couple of small firms and see what it would cost you to get it fixed as a cash job0

Thanks. I still have the hire car. If I were to try to claim on mine - I';d have to insure it for next few days - as i will have it a while, as the crack could easily appear on saturday. I have protected no claims.
What I am interested in also is - what would it cost me to get it fixed if I tell vauxhall it happened ? Will their insurance nt have lower excess for windscreen like most?
Doubt it's fixable it's gone from being a small chip to a 20cm crack
Windscreen claims do not affect no claims discount entitlement with most companies anyway ( I think Swift are an exception). But I think they will apply a loading to the premium for the windscreen claim and this would stay on a policy for a few years.
My advice is not to try to involve your own Car Insurers in this. If you get caught out, the consequences would be costly. The comments I post are personal opinion. You are talking about insurance fraud which is a criminal offence and a stupid thing to do for £250.0
