Trading car in today for another..can i take my road tax and get a refund???

I am trading my car in later today towards the purchase of a newer car. I only got my road tax last week for 1 year costing £180.

Am i perfectly entitled once i get to the dealership to remove my tax disc from my old car and send it back for a partial refund ???

When i purchased my new car the guy asked how long i had left on my road tax and i told him only bought 1yr last week. At no point was it ever mentioned as being part of the deal toward my new car.

Can anyone enlighten me please. Due to head off in the next 2 hours to go collect it. Thanks

motor traders are no longer allowed to cash in the tax, as they arent the registered owner of the vehicle, so yes, as the owner you are allowed to take the tax disc and cash it in

  • The dealer cannot cash in the tax, but can sell a car with tax on it.

You were asked how long your car was taxed for, and you said 11 months.

Presenting it with no tax is at best cheeky, and at worst dishonest.

It may be the dealer intends to retail your old car and advertise it to the public as taxed.

As posted above yes you are, my last 4 cars have been purchased from dealers and all 4 times i have cashed the tax disc in (in fact as part of the check list at polar ford 1 question is have you removed the tax disc, they also used to give the refund form as part of the new car pack.

Certainly nothing wrong with trying but I’d have said the fact that they asked means they have factored the value into the deal.

A car with a years tax is worth more when they sell it on.

Reagarding your old car, make sure you bring your bit of the V5 away filled out properly and post it yourself to dvla.

He will have factored the £180 into the trade in price. You can't remove it unless you advise him of your intention.

Am not doing anything dishonest at all. I was merely asking with regards to my entitlement of taking the tax discf or a refund. As said, he did NOT say it was factored into the price and I fully intend to tell him that.

A car on a dealership forecourt is NOT required to have a tax disc on it and if it is being taken for a test drive then the dealership plates cover it.

At no point did they say the tax was included in the trade in price. So I feel I am well within my rights.

You did, because when discussing the spec/value of your car, the salesman asked if it was taxed.

    You said 'yes'.

It's clear at that point the salesman was gathering information to value your car.

And would you apply the same logic to the spare wheel on your trade in?

And be happy if you checked to see if your new car had one but it had gone when you collected the car?

As I said you can certainly try but I’d say the fact they asked means they have factored it into the value of your car

Why have you asked the question?

It is clear from this post that you intend to remove the tax disc whatever response you get here.
