NTL broadband sharing

Hi there hope this is in the right forum its a techie question anyway.

I have NTL broadband in my bedroom which I connect to my pc with the ethernet cable.

What I want to know is this? I am thinking of buying a new pc for my bedroom and am thinking of putting the other pc downstairs when I buy it. I know I should really get a router and all that but is it possible to use the two different pcs on broadband. I mean if i get a long ethernet cable to connect to the pc downstairs. What I want to do is if I am downstairs or my father is downstairs and fancy using the internet I/he will run upstairs plug the cable modem in and connect the ethernet cable that is connected to the downstairs pc then go back downstairs and turn on my pc and surf the net.

Or if I am upstairs and I want to use the internet I will plug my upstairs ethernet cable into the cable modem which is next to my upstairs pc and surf the net. Is this possible I ask to use two different pcs through the one cable modem but not at the same time? I will get a proper router and that in the future but seeing as i am buying the new pc i cant afford it in the near future and wondered if i could do what i mentioned above.

Ive heard that ntl only issue you with one IP address but have also read that it changes every time you load your pc up so surely it wouldnt matter which pc was connected to the cable modem as long as it was only one at that actual time.

    Hi JT
I think what you suggested will be OK.
First you could try both PCs in the upstairs room and connect them both to the cable modem one at a time.
If they both surf OK then buy a long lead and move the other PC downstairs.
    Go for it:cool:

Yes it is possible, I have set up my pc's in exactly the same way that you are suggesting, using NTL broadband, of course you must take into account the longer the cables are between the pc's the weaker the signal will become. I have considered getting a wireless router, but I find the old cable method is not only more reliable, but safer. Take into account that in order to share the internet, your main pc set up would have to be switched on in order for the other to share. ;)

Length of cat5 cable in a UK home is unlikely to be a problem, since the specified maximum in a single segment is 328 feet = 100m and all cat5 cable is required to meet this specification.
