Hlp Pls Printer Probs - Do i need to change all carts?

Hi All, I have a Brother DCP115C printer which until now has been very good. Have a display saying that the Black and Cyan Cartridges are empty. Ordered a new black cart but haven't bothered with the Cyan as all Black and white printing - put the new black cart in but it's saying ink empty for both black anbd cyan.

So does anyone know if i will have to replace the cyan inorder to get the black to work or should it work even if cyan is empty? I am printing greyscale so no colour.

can anyone help me with this please - stupid question i know but don't want to fork out for the colour carts if it's not going to solve the problem!
