Employment contract subject to credit checks?!

OMG Help! I've just accepted a fantastic new job with a major player in the financial market as a sales rep selling financial products ie chip and pin
Recd the offer letter this morning and it says the offer is subject to credit checks and I'm bricking it now as I have literally just got a CCJ and I'm on a DMP with CCCS!
One of the reasons I went for this job as its a lot more money and I'll be able to get all my debts paid off.
Does anyone have any experience of this? Are they just making sure I'm not a fraudster with a criminal record of money laundering or am I in the proverbial brown stuff?!

I went for a job 10 yrs ago with a credit card company, i got rejected due to credit check, i applied for a bank job, last month, got to last part and it asked have u ever been bankrupt, it didnt say in last 6 yrs cos after that it be off history and they cant be prejudice.
anyway i had a iva 4 yrs ago and that isnt bankrupt, but there was no place on form to explain it so, i didnt finish the from.
I think if its a money credit job u need to prove ur solvent and not open to being tempted to steal or offered bribes.hence the check, police jobs get checks toChristians Against Poverty solved my debt problem, when all other debt charities failed. Give them a call !! ( You don't have to be a Christian ! )

Thanks for your reply Stu.
As I am not handling cash I don't understand why they are looking and how much of a problem it will be?0 -
2 main reasons either a)
u have to show u can manage ur own money and hence be a reputable/money wise knowledgeable employee
or b)
is any part of ur new job open to bribes, eg will potential customers offer you cash/gifts direct to u inorder to get them a low price, great deal
Or is the chance you have access to stock that you could steal or loose accidentaley into hands of friends.eg pcs, monitors, credit cards,
or do you have access to potentially clone their credit card details or pass on their details to fraudsters for a gain for urself.Christians Against Poverty solved my debt problem, when all other debt charities failed. Give them a call !! ( You don't have to be a Christian ! )

No I'm just basically selling chip and pin devices to customers. You could be offered cash and gifts in any sales job in exchange for low prices I think but it wouldn't be in my interest to do it as I am targeted on rates! I've just called the agent and he thinks they are just going to make sure I haven't been made bankrupt, which I haven't, he is going to do a bit of digging and ring me back.0

Any job with an employer involved in finance requires a credit check nowadays.
It's what removes a large portion of the job market for me as well. But, that's my own fault.0 -
Surely there's a security aspect to that which requires the company knowing you are less likely to be subject to bribes, blackmail etc?
But how? I just get them to sign the contract saying they want to rent the terminal for xx months and what % they will pay on credit card payments. I don't even see the terminal or anyone's credit cards- it arrives in the post from head office and they just plug it in and start using it.0 -
It doesn't matter what you do in the industry, if you want to work in it you have to be credit checked. That's how it's been for a long time.0

Just wanted to say I think it is really bad that people are assumed to be criminally minded eg open to bribes etc just because they have got in money troubles in the past. If they were that criminally minded they would presumably have stolen/defrauded their way out of debt in the first place!
OP I hope you don't get your offer of employment withdrawn. I can see how in some jobs eg a financial advisor, it woudl look bad to have a bad credit history, but not in your case. I know the financial services industry do credit check applicants for all roles as a matter of course, I work in HR so not on the financial side at all, but have been credit checked as standard when working anywhere in the financial services industry even when on short term contracts0 -
Yes its fairly standard I dont even bother applying for FS jobs anymore as know I would be refused having had money problems when partner left me.0
