Insuring a second car

Morning all,
Been having a look through the forum but can't find any threads which seem appropriate.
I have insurance on one car, with the other half as a named driver. We've been thinking of getting a second car, as I have changed jobs and now have a long commute, but I didn't know that NCD can only be used on one car, so now I'm faced with paying a large amount of insurance, having to start from scratch, if we want to get the other car.
I played around with a few things on the comparison sites, including putting the other half as the main driver on the second car, as women usually get cheaper quotes, and eventually got a quote for £350 When i phoned up to get the policy, they then said it was actually £673 due to it being a second car and the other half having no NCD due to being a named driver only, on the first car!
How hard is it to get insured on a second car? Any tips/experiences that may be able to help?
Thanks in advance.

Your existing insurer will often “mirror” NCB onto a second car, otherwise go see a local broker0

I have a second car and both are insured with admiral. When I got the second car they mirrored the ncb I have on the first car (subject to me not having any fault claims in the last 3 years)Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0

You may be better off putting your oh as main driver (if she is), and getting insurance in her name. A few companies with give an introduction equal to the ncd she would have earned for the years she was named driver on your policy, and indeed worth trying your own insurers to see if they will give you a deal.

I was just about to ask the very same question, but checked existing posts first :A.
Anyway, thank you SO much for the "mirroring" tip. I suggested this to my existing company and they agreed to give me a mirrored full 9yrs NCD on my new second car. I recon this has probably saved me about £700
I love this site.

Check both cars in the womans name, Guy at work bought a BMW for himself so his wife could have use of the family car.
Turned out to be cheaper for him to register the BMW in his wifes name and not use the NCD and for him to keep the family
car in his name.
You really do have to try every angle. Adding an accident prone mother to my policy would reduce it by £30 or so.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Would the addition of an accident prone mother not increase the premium?0 -

In the real world yes, in the world of insurance maybe.
I've got a group 20 car, had a theft claim back in year dot and adding my OH (one fault & one non fault in the past 3 years) knocked money off my premium. Adding me to her policy increased it.
Adding my 80 year old dad to hers made no difference, adding him to mine doubled it with half the companies refusing to quote.
I'm sure there is some logic there somewhere but it evades me0 -
