DVD recorder not recognising disc

Ok - bit of a long story, but I think the preamble may have some relevance!

I use DVD-RW at work to do back ups, and I have a couple of DVDs that I was unable to use for this purpose, so I decided I may as well use them at home with my DVD recorder. However, when I put the DVD into the recorder it showed a message saying 'Format' and then one saying 'No Disc'. I thought the DVD must be the wrong format for my recorder, BUT now the DVD recorder doesn't read any DVDs, including pre-recorded, and discs that we have recorded ourselves on that recorder.

Any suggestions please?

  • Sounds to me like the laser may have been knocked out of line.
If it's still under warranty, I would suggest taking it back to where you bought it from.
thats what id do anyway. Simple answer I know, but the best i can do

you could also try the great IT solution to everything, turn it of and turn it on again, completely unplug it wait for a few mins then turn it on again.

It does sound like a mechanical error though as dsom73 mentioned

    Thanks for both the responses.

I had tried the great IT solution to everything without success.

Wouldn't the unit need an impact of some kind for the laser to be knocked out of line? It was working perfectly a couple of days ago, and I'm sure it won't have been dropped or knocked - there's only me and DH in the house, no kids or pets or anything so we'd know if it had been.

As always happens, we've had the unit more than a year, no warranty. I may have to find a friendly engineer to fix it.

    Thanks, LL

  • It is worth remembering that there are numerous brands of disc's and some machines don't like some brands, My advise would be to try different brands until you find one that your machine likes then stick with it. ie :- Datawrite Grey seem to be tolerated by most machines.

Can using the wrong brand of disc stop the player recognising other discs? It isn't recognising discs that have previously been used and played fine.

  • There is "no wrong brand of disc" it'd just that some brands of DVD recorders may not like the disc brand you are using. On the other hand there is DVD -R ,DVD+R, DVD Ram then you have the DVD- RW, DVD+RW which are re-writable discs. You must make sure that your machine is compatable with the type of disc you are trying to use

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious, but can using the wrong format of disc actually make the DVD player unusable altogether? Because that is what has happened. It isn't just the new disc that I've introduced that it isn't recognising, it's ANY disc, including those that have worked before such as pre-recorded discs and those that we have recorded TV programmes onto ourselves.
