Can't open PayPal webpage

I've posted this on the ebay thread but I guess that I might get an answer here.

I can't open PayPal pages properly at the moment. I need to make a payment and have been trying since last night. It just takes literally hours to open a page and to make a payment takes quite a few pages. The page doesn't freeze, it just takes forever. I've cleared cookies and re-booted and also ran my adaware and spybot programs. Nothing helps.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • If using Internet explorer try. Tools, Internet Options, General Tab, Browsing History (I use IE7 so maybe different), then Settings, and choose "every time I visit a page" then OK, I would also flush the dns resolver cache just incase.

Start, Run, then type cmd then type ipconfig /flushdns then hit enter.

If that doesnt work it maybe your security settings.

Thanks for the ideas. I've done all that and it doesn't seem to have helped at all. I'm just doing a thorough virus scan too just incase. So far it seems fine, no virus.

Any idea what to do next?

  • Is this happening only with Paypal, or with other secure (https:/) sites too, e.g. online banking?

    Is it broadband or dial-up?

In IE, try Tools - Internet Options - Connections tab - Setup.

Try disabling your firewall temporarily to see if that makes any difference.
  • Maybe SSL in Tools, Internet Options, Advanced Tab, scroll to security, what SSL(s) are ticked.

    Thanks for replying.

Online banking is working fine. I have recently changed to TalkTalk Broadband from BT.

I've just turned the firewall off and that hasn't helped.

It's managed to progress to my account overview now, almost 3 hours! Hopefully I can make this payment before bedtime (tomorrow!).

I'm not sure what you meant by Tools - Internet Options - Connections tab - Setup. What should I do then?

I'm suspecting that it's TalkTalk that are making this happen. I wish that I'd stayed with BT now.

Both "Use SSL 2.0" and "Use SSL 3.0" No other SSL's showing.

Run through the wizard - connect internet, manually, broadband always on. I doubt whether it will fix the problem cos other secure and non secure sites are ok, but it's worth trying.

    Try clearing IE temporary files.

Are you using just a ADSL modem, or a router too? Shutdown your PC. Switch off the modem/router for 2 minutes, turn back on. Then switch on PC.

Maybe the secure thing is a red herring and it's the Paypal web servers that are slow. Try browsing the normal http://www.paypal.co.uk/uk and see if that's slow.

Well how amazing. I've got up this morning, ran to the pc before even making a coffee and the payment has gone through! It must have been a PayPal problem I guess. I'm just so relieved that I don't have to go to an internet cafe today to pay it.

Thanks to you both for your time and help, it was interesting!

    Just to update.

Today it all went wrong again and I couldn't get into PayPal again. I'd also asked advice on the ebay thread and icefall suggested downloading Microsoft Net Framework 2.0 which I did. While I was there I downloaded IE7 too and now everything is just whizzing along.

Is IE7 new? I have automatic updates but have never had this before, I didn't even know that it existed. It's a bit weird but seems fast.

Thank you all again for the help!
