Zone Alarm and Streaming Radio Drop-outs.

When I listen to radio I do this via steaming from BBC (even though only on dial-up). But notice that when I get loss in stream (sometimes up to 2 mins) these times correspond with ZA alert blocks.

Could ZA be blocking the stream intermitently and if so then how do you designate the steam source as Trusted since the BBC don't give out that info. Is it likely that various different IPs are used to emit the stream hence the difficulty in singling out one to make Trusted for ZA?

Have asked the Beeb AND ZA but so far no reply so am seeking info amongst the many informed here.

Am a bit dopey when comes to PC tech knowledge so lowbrow explanations/advice most welcome.

Incidentally for those who want to hear X-chancellor Denis Healey effing and blinding his way through one of the Wartime ditties he used to sing with comrades then Listen Again to SOLDIERS SONGS R4...runs til Tues 14th.

  • Streaming on 56k dial up would produce a result of staggered sound because their is some buffering going on, if you were on Broad Band I doubt this would happen, I think its coincidence.

Funny as had far fewer interruptions before downloading the last ZA update and removed the Alert Events pop-up as was convinced THAT was causing the drop-outs (plus it was way too frequent a visual distraction).

Perhaps the Beeb are just getting too much demand so more buffering occuring (?).

Appreciate BB would be better but lot more expensive and don't need BB for anything else re my usage (not a pirate downloader etc).

Thats out of order, not everyone who is on BB is a Pirate downloader, and I expect that you are paying the same for dial up as BB.
  • how much are you paying for dial-up? BB is much cheaper nowadays.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

£5 a month for Unlimited Dial Up....when the providers let you log on.....

    There are so many extra costs/problems with BB;
contracts that tie you to one address (my house is up for sale so no idea where I will be over next year),
having to get an external ADSL modem which is more expense plus will run on separate power source than the internal 56k modem, further adding to running costs,
having to pay a large initial amount for the BB installation (£40 - £80 isn't it; possibly waived if you remain with the same [untested and potentially lousy] provider for at least a year and maybe up to 2!)
.....BB is a BIG upheaval after years contented (of sorts) on Dial Up contracts.

Everyone I have encountered who is on BB is much richer than I, yet still steals every piece of music/film/TV (especially from US channels much earlier than UK receives the titles; just check out the multitude who swap pirating info on the Techie threads; it is RIFE!) and as someone with artistic leanings I loathe the idea of theft of copyright.

Therefore many reasons to defer the BB switch for now.
  • And you want help from the users hanging out in the techie forum ?

BTW I'm happily streaming BBC radio about 8-12 hours a day. And through a machine that uses ZA. Good innit.

DR. BENWAY: "Very likely but there's no time."

Thats annoying enough to move to BB in the fist place.

    Not all BB is contract.

My modem was 100% free and my supplier will always give away a free modem.

Free installation with my provider and at a 2meg connection Ive never had one drop out.

Is downloading illegal ? I though breach of copyright was a civil matter not a criminal offense.

I also thought that that there has yet to any action taken against anybody downloading copyright material in the UK that all the legal action was taken against people uploading. Again the action taken was in the civil courts (or more usually settled out of court)

Illegal means forbidden by law or statute.

If was to download `stuff that hasnt been paid for` which law would I be breaking i.e. can you point me to the stuff that hasnt been paid for Act of parliament or can you find any examples of people being prosecuted under this law?
