Carrying Lots of cash abroad

I'm getting married in Japan next week. I've got loads of Japanese yen (about £4000 worth) in cash. I've got to give this to my future father in law as soon as I arrive as a contribution to the wedding costs but am worried about carrying so much cash, not only could it get stolen but what with being jetlagged etc I could lose it somehow - there's a one night stop over in Shanghai too.

I've not got any travel insurance yet - no travel insurance policy covers cash does it? Of course I could buy travellers cheques with it but they'd charge me to convert it back into sterling, then 48 hours later I'd lose money changing it back into yen. I was thinking of just sticking it in a secure pocket. Any advice?

£4k in your pocket, my word which flight are you on?

I would transfer the money internastionally from your bank to his, afterall if you get stopped at customs 4k is a lot of lolly
  • ha ha, I better not give you the flight number or the muggers will be waiting for me at Heathrow, maybe an international transfer is the best but I'll lose money converting it into pounds then back again. i guess there's no way round it.

i have a travel wallet that loops around your belt so it sits inside my trousers. carry all my bulk cash passports and Credit cards in it without worrying
the loop makes it impossible to drop , put down , forget or get it stolen by Pickpockets or Muggers.( as you cannot even tell it is there as it is very thin and is designed to fit flush against your leg)

i also carry a mugger wallet full of expired credit cards , very small amount of cash in notes , and other bits of plastic junk (i,e blockbuster cards ect) and low value foriegn coins.

travel wallet cost me £5 at Coventry airport of all places a few years back and has proved a very sound investment. i simply could not imagine travelling without it

here is a near identical one to mine !!!!!!

İf you do decide to take cash with you, customs may well ask of its origin(money laundering), take bank statements and you'll be ok, i regulary bought 2-3k in cash with me over here.
