Can't get car Insurance!!!!

I am 25 years old, have held my licence for 7 years. I have held a policy for a car in my 3rd and 4th years of driving until an accident which was my fault in 2006. In the last 2 years I have been a named driver on my partners policy. This has actually reduced the cost of his insurance.
However, when I try and get take out a policy on my name the lowest quote i get is £1700. I dont have any NCB as I couldnt afford a car and now that I have the opportunity to aquire a new car, the insurance is extortionate.
Putting my partner on the insurance just bumps up the cost. I Haven't had any other accidents in the last 5 years or any motoring convictions.
I know I need to build up my No Claims but i seem to be in a catch 22 situation. I need a car and would be reluctant but willing to pay £1100 for my insurance as a compromise.
I have shopped around for insurance on comparision sites as well as individual sites. Any help would be appreciated.

Your post is misleading - you can get car insurance - you just don't like the terms you are being offered.
Nobody has an automatic right to insurance at the price they want to pay (which is usually as little as possible). You basically have two choices - read through the various posts on here to see how to save a little - go for the lowest group car possible, add an older female relative with no accidents, claims or convictions, take a high excess, get quotes for third party only, try Co-op, NFU and Aviva, etc. etc.
The other choice is you accept that this is the market rate for the risk you present to insurers, which is based on your age, gender, driving experience, vehicle and postcode.
At the end of the day £1700 is a lot less than some others are being quoted so it could be worse - at least you can get a quote!0 -
OP you may be best to visit a broker to discuss insurance.
The reason i say this is that you can discuss with them face to face the fact that you have actually been a named driver for the last two years.
A lot of companies will offer you a discount on your own policy because you have these two years claim free driving even though it was earned as a named driver.
On comparisson sites etc there is little scope to add this info in so visit a local broker .The loopy one has gone :j0 -
There is a difference between being a named driver, and actually driving the car.
Your just going to have to suck the costs up, and pay the fee. You might save some £££ by going TPFT, but it all depends on the value of the car.0 -

Well , when I went from being a named driver to having my own policy the company allowed me a discount because I had been a named driver....not once did they ask me how many miles I had actually driven as a named driver...the question was simply "have you been a named driver or held insurance on a company car".The loopy one has gone :j0 -
Churchill offer named driver ncd discount and the other vehicle does not have to be insured with them, as long as you meet the criteria.0
