Cheap fancy dress outfit

Hi there. Looking for some ideas. I have just been invited to a fancy dress party next month and am looking for a cheap costume. I'm not massivrly creative so not very good at making things, but don't have a lot of money to buy a costume. Does anyone have any suggestions for a costume that is quite easy to make. Thanks!

It kind of depends if there's a theme, but the above suggestions are all good. I've gotten away with wearing a smart suit and a notepad and pen and going as a secretary ;)

Thanks for the ideas everyone! Some of these are great. There is no theme to the party so have plenty of options. Think I am going to go as pocahontus (already have long dark hair, so wouldn't need a wig or anything, just the dress etc) Have seen a few cheapish costumes online but am looking for something quite specific - not too short or revealing, preferably with a bit of sleeve and not too high cut, as I am quite busty. It probably doesn't exist but you never know!

i need an idea of where to get a cheap old fashioned cravat or bow tie for a thing i am doing too, so i will be watching this thread!
  • Due to a combination of my thrifty ways and hatred of wearing uncomfortable outfits, I always go for puns as fancy dress costumes - a top covered in badges and you're a badger, me and a friend once dressed as builders with streamers and balloons and went as the labour party, etc. I always prefer costumes based around real clothes as you're less likely to be too hot, cold or uncomfortable, but perhaps that's because I am an old curmudgeon!

A pair of old dungarees or boiler suit, clip board, mutter "ooh its. going to cost a lot" and be a cowboy builder. Always better if you have a cowboy hat and or a plastic gun. Or a hard hat works as well. Not very glam but slightly amusing. Unless you are a builder like my husband!
