I'm making auto-payments of £1 but they're being rejected so what do I do now??

I've got several creditors so set up standing orders to make token payments of a £1 to each of them as that is all I can afford but this month my payment to Santander was rejected.
I made a one-off payment in case it was a problem with the bank but this was rejected as well...
So I wondered if any more experienced peeps could tell me what to do instead?
I could send them a cheque but do I need to it by registered / recorded delivery?

  • Your creditors have to bank any payment by law, if your going to send the payment it is best to send it recorded delivery otherwise they would make out they never recieved it! hope this helps! :)

  • Hi Mics Chick

I would write to them asking them for an explanation of why your payment is being rejected. I would explain that you are making token payments in an effort to demonstrate your willingness to pay off the debt, and that the payment is all you can currently afford, and that by rejecting your payments they are not helping you in your current financial situation.

I would also mention that evidence of your payments, and their consequent rejections of those payments will be kept for your records (don't write this bit!!! The reason for this is in the very unlikely event they decided to take you to court, you would be able to demonstrate you tried to make payments to the account but Santander rejected them. The court would take a dim view of this behaviour and they know this, but stating you will keep evidence of this implies everything here in red. You just don't need to spell it out at this point!)

Personally I would send a postal order, not a cheque. I wouldn't want any creditors to be able to record any information of a new bank account you may have.

As stated, send by recorded delivery and never sign any letters. Always use a fancy font instead.
