I have switched from edf to npower

electricity and gas switch over date was 27th December.

Edf took out the usual direct debit on the 30th dec after the switch date.

I am in credit with the Electricity but owe £20/£30 on the gas.

NPower start their direct debits on 25th January.

Should I cancel the dd with edf and wait for a final bill or let them
take another months money and try to claim it back ?

Wait for your final bill, the refund may come by that means rather than by a cheque.
You don't have to 'claim' it back, it's an automatic process (though some suppliers do take longer than others to pay up).

They can't take out or pay back in.
If there is still a balance owing and they try to take it then you could get hit with a failed DD charge.

By EDF (if they have such a policy)
I fail to see what you would achieve by cancelling it.

I do not want 2 (edf/Npower) lots of direct debits to go out at the same time then have to wait for the refund .
I do not mind npower taking the monthly d/d out since they are now my supplier
but not edf since they already owe me money and do not supply me any more.

If you cancel the DD after you've left you'll get a paper bill for the final bill and any credit owed will come by cheque. I recently got a cheque from British Gas for one penny!

You will probably be in breach of contract, so your final bill will be based on the suppliers standard (expensive) tariff ... and no discounts.

You will be fine as long as it is after the official switch date. Then there will be no breach in Ts and Cs as they are no longer your supplier.
