Braunton or Thurlestone

We are a family of 10 mixed ages between 1 and 60 looking for a week away in a hired house/cottage. I have seen one in Braunton and one in Thurleston and wondered if anyone has any advice on either area as I have never travelled to Devon before.
Ideally we would like the village that we stay in to have it's own beach or within a short walking distance (or drive if necessary), some pubs and nice shops but not too touristy (i.e. Newquay).
Does anyone have any advice?
many thanks
