Hotel charging me £175 for cracked window!

hi all,

I stayed in a hotel (well abit more of a converted house) over new years. When shutting one of the windows, it fell shut from about 1 foot and caused a couple of the panels to crack, with one bit of glass flying onto the floor (about the size of finger).

We informed the woman on reception who didnt seem interested and said she would refer it to maintenance. Today I have received a bill of £175, for essentially closing a window and feel pretty aggrieved.

As the hotel can just take the money out of the account they consider the matter closed and have accused us of not telling them about it. Is there anything I can do? e.g. some sort of complaints service that I could at least threaten them with

Any help would be much appreciated.
