I bought an alto sax last week from Musikhaus (a German company). It took two days to get here (free P&P). It cost £203 and arrived in excellent condition, we're really pleased with it.

    Hello,
Does your daughter have lessons? If so what kind of standard is she at?

Is it an alto sax you are looking for?

When I was 15 I had a Yamaha student alto sax (model YAS275 is the equivalent now) Around £600. I found it was excellent and ideal to learn on and it's probably the most recommended make by music teachers for new students. You can buy much cheaper saxophones but you dont want to go too cheap as it can sound awful and be damaged easily.

I have always had second hand (but excellent condition) instruments, this is a good way to save cash, but you need to take someone along to see the sax who knows a bit about them. If this would be difficult then another option is to buy a second hand one from a music shop - you will obviously pay a bit more this way as the shop will take their cut, but you should have some guarantee and it will have been checked/serviced by a pro.

I would rather have a decent saxophone second hand than a cheapo make one that's brand new, and often if an instruments been cared for (particularly by an adult owner) you can hardly tell it's not new anyway.

A student model sax's sound can be improved as your daughter improves her skill just by upgrading the mouthpiece too.

    good luck!

P.S. some larger music stores have schemes where you can hire the instruments and then have the option to buy the same instrument in a year or two at a much reduced rate. This may be an option for kids who might possibly change their mind in a few months!
