You should be able to tax it at the post office on friday, to start in Jan

If your vehicle has been untaxed, because you’ve just bought it, the tax disc has run out or a SORN is in force, you can tax from the first day of the month in which you apply.
If you want the tax disc to start on the first day of the next calendar month, you cannot tax your vehicle more than two days in advance

The problem with taxing it at the Post Office is that you need proof of insurance. If you can get a certificate facsimiled to you then you're sorted. OR you can tax on-line where they're able to determine insurance status electronically. The problem then is the time it takes for the tax disk to arrive. At least the police computer will show you as being taxed.

I had to drive my new car with no tax for 24 hours earlier this year. I rang the DVLA for advice and they were no use at all (if you even find the number for the correct department.) Their advice in the end was that I couldn't legally drive my car until I attended the post office the following day after my new insurance certificate arrived in the first class post. The problem was that I bought the car first thing in the morning and was on a late shift that day. I did ask then, given that I was doing my best to stay within the law (unlike the how-many uninsured drivers in the country) how I was supposed to get to work. They couldn't answer that.

Amazing. Who forced you to do that?

Why do you say the DVLA were no use at all?
They told you about your obligations.
What else did you expect from an official body?

All that is of no concern of the DVLA, is it?
Should the laws perhaps be re-written with your shift patterns in mind?
Or maybe you should just plan you car buying activities a little bit better.

Did you really ask the DVLA how you were supposed to get to work?
    How silly.
  • Mmph, very helpful reply there.

Life, society. I had to get to work. You can argue the definition of "forced" but I'd hope that you'd accept a figure of speech.

It was January so I can't remember the details entirely. Essentially, I was trying to stay completely within the law but they wouldn't allow me to tax the car on line as they didn't have proof of my ownership (the "log book" being in the possession of the dealers / me). On the other hand I couldn't tax it in a post office without proof of insurance. Consider it's all supposed to be easy to do I found the complete opposite. I think my problem was actually getting through to the correct department in the first place.

Erm... them being receptive to me giving them money. Is that really so radical?

Well, yes it is. The legality of drivers and vehicles is their concern. Particularly when a (mostly) law-abiding citizen is trying to remain law-abiding and do the right thing.

Next time I will think ahead of these things. On this occassion I accepted that the process was easy. I was wrong. And actually I did plan my buying activity - I snapped up a bargain of the perfect car before someone else did :D

Well, actually I asked the operative that I was speaking to how I was supposed to get to work. I didn't ask the whole DVLA. And yes I did. I was quite shocked at how difficult they'd made the system. Honestly, you'd think staying within the law would be easy!
