Self Employment Help

Hi, Im sorry if youve been asked this question a hundred times already but I registered as self employed back in October. I have yet to have any information come through from the Inland Revenue.

I know I need to register as NI exempt as I will not make enough money to pay it, but Ive had no letters, confirmation, or details of when my first self assessment needs filing.

Am i right in think I will not need to complete an assessment until January 2012 and how do i get on line registration as I have no tax reference etc.

I have phoned twice to ask on the self employment helpline but I just get told to wait. Im worried incase I have to submit anything this January.

Thanks for anyone who can help.

And Merry Christmas

Havent received anything yet. When I registered, they asked what I would make and I said it would be below £5,000 ( which it definately will be ) But not heard a thing since.

Will I need to send a tax return or anything in in January 2011? Where do I register to do it online.

    Thanks for your help.

You should have heard by now, ring the newly self employed helpline, and if they don't have anything on your account, re register over the phone. have you filled in Small earnings Exception form CF10? you will need to do that if you want an excemption certificate, but remember, you will not get a credit towards your pension if you get the certificate.

If you registered self employed in October then your letters to welcome you as self employed arent actually that late .

When my OH registered i think it was 8-10 weeks before he received anything in the post from HMRC . After this time the first thing he received was a NIC bill.

As you only registered self employed in October your first self assesment will not be due until jan 2102 anyhow so you have plenty of time to get this sorted.

Once the welcome pack does come you can then register for the government gateway and get registered for online filing in plenty of time for filing in 2012.

and don't panic if the 1st thing you get is a bill for NICs: phone (again) and say you've asked for exemption.
Signature removed for peace of mind

Exactly ! As per my previous post , this is exactly what happened when my OH started self employment.

We were just beginning to think that HMRC had not received the registration form we had sent to them as it had been 8-10 weeks since we posted it off , but then we received a NIC bill and were relieved to know that at least we were now on the system.

I got a letter from the inland revenue on christmas eve, now saying weve noticed you are eligible for self assessment now. Stating they have enclosed a leaflet, but no leaflet enclosed.

It says we will let you know when we want the self assessment completed. But it doesnt specify.

Can some please confirm to me that i dont have to complete one by Jan 2011. Im not going bonkers am i?

    Only started trading in October.

    Thanks guys
