Help! My car won't switch off!

I have a 2005 VW Touran bought new in 2005 and overall it's been great. However, recently it's not switching off when I turn the key and I can even take the key out and the engine keeps running. After dozens of tries, it will eventually switch off - with the exception of one time when I had to give up on my errand and drive (50 miles) home. I've taken it to my local garage but as it only happens sometimes (maybe 2-3 times per week), they can't see what's wrong as it hasn't happened when it was with them. Needless to say, it's out of warranty. Any ideas?

What happens when you deliberately stall the engine?

Does ur local garage have vag-com? If not rake (sorry, take) it to a vw specialist and they can plug it in.

Ive heard it on old engines but nothing this new!

Sounds like a rather bad case of serious over riding.

It could be to do with the ECU but this would need to be taken to a garage to verify - needs connecting to a fault reading computer and code pulling.

Does the car have "start/stop technology"?

Could it possibly be something to do with that?
Perhaps the engine stops via a relay or signal from the ECU rather than the ignition barrel switch and that system is somehow not sending that "shutdown signal" when you stop the car..... Perhaps sticking relay contacts?

  • does it use a lot of oil?? it needs some decent diagnostic gear,
  • Presumably it's a diesel, if it were my engine I'd guess the fuel shutoff valve was malfunctioning. The next time it happens, put it in 5th gear and stall it.

Does everything else switch off, ie the dash lights, headlights etc, so as to rule out it being a simple ignition switch defect???
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
