Can you have a combi boiler and underfloor heating?

Title says it all really.

We are in the process of doing a complete renovation of a two bed c.1900 semi cottage that has never had heating installed (we currently only have a hot water boiler).

We are in the process of getting quotes from plumbers to fit a gas central heating system, new boiler and all associate pipe work etc.

We are, at present, considering underfloor heating in the kitchen (area approx 3.4 x 5m, about 2/3 of the ground area of the house).

The first guy we got in said that a combi boiler is incompatible with underfloor heating and if that was what we wanted we would have to go down the megaflow route.

The second guy said that combi was no problem and has provided a quote and recommendation to install such a boiler.

I've done a bit of web research but being a plumbing novice haven't been able to find a definitive answer on this.

Extra info in case it helps - we currently only have one bathroom, but will shortly be installing a downstairs loo and anticipate in the the next two years extending to incorporate another bedroom & en-suite so whatever system we choose has to have excess capacity.

Thanks for your help.

  • Have thought about the route of electric underfloor heating if the combi you buy is not compatible?

Have considered electric but understand it's much more expensive to run that water powered - right / wrong?

All combi's are suitable for UFH. The boiler has no direct bearing on what type of 'heat emitters' you use.

Just find an installer who knows his stuff.
