Broken Toilet!

Hiya, I managed to snap a bit off from inside the toilet cistern today. Now the toilet constantly 'microflushed' - by which I mean there is a little bit of water flowing down the bowl all the time, just like at the end of a proper flush.

You can see in this picture:

The top two circles are the two ends where it was attached, and the bottom circle is where the water goes out.

Can anyone suggest a fix or know what the bit I've snapped is called so I can order a replacement?

Thanks!

Pete

It's the part of the flusher arm that connects to the bit what stops the water from continually flowing - so it's got no shut off any more.

Erm, the proper technical terms escape me right now, but I don't know if you can get just a replacement of the bit you broke - it may be far less expensive to just replace the entire inard bit - which is called the, er, syphon I think

can you flush the toilet using the handle?

It still flushes - it's a push button rather than handle. The large white circle on the right is what makes it flush when you push it down.

actually, that picture really isn't very clear. Does the metal hook normally clip into something that is attached to the flushing handle?

if so, you may need a replacement flushing handle as well as the water syphon thing - where is the piece that broke?

or - did the white bit break because you were using the metal hook by pulling upwards to flush?

sorry for all the questions - I think I know the problem.

You've broken off the flotation device which tells the water to stop flowing, possibly because the flusher handle was previously broken....

ah, in that case, it is the flotation device you've broken off - it's cheaper to replace the entire unit than try and get a part to replace the broken bit if you see what I mean.

if possible, what you need is something similar to this: - http://www.screwfix.com/prods/84007/Plumbing/Toilet-Fittings/Fluidmaster-Bottom-Entry-Fill-Valve-UK

the red herring in the picture is the hook - it's an old fill valve that's been used in a newer style toilet.

custardy - are all posties also plumbers? small world :-)

too tight to pay for a plumber ;)
when we bought this place i found some dodgy repairs
the pipe on the toilet began leaking and i could see it had been siliconed a few times
all for the sake of an easy fix and a few quid on the right part

I think I did things the wrong way round, I was a postie during uni summer holidays, did something else for a few years, trained up in plumbing (though a lot of this knowledge now escapes me) and then back to being a postie. You'd have thought I'd have learned my lesson the first time!

OP - hope I have been of some help to you
