Where have our pipes frozen? Any advice...

I'm hoping someone with a bit of knowledge / experience of this might be able to give me some advice. We woke up this morning to find there was no hot water running in our main upstairs bathroom basin or cloakroom, but there was in the bath and in the kitchen downstairs. The cold is OK in all the rooms. The heating is working - we have a standard boiler with a hot tank in the airing cupboard.

We're assuming (with minimal knowledge) that we've got frozen pipes somewhere but as the hot water tap on the bath is working that the problem lies with the pipes that directly feed into the taps, rather than a larger pipe in the loft. What do you think - could this be the case and if so does that make it less likely we'll have to deal with a burst pipe?

  • same here.. we have a combi boiler..the heating is working fine..we have hot water in the kitchen but no hot water in the toilet.. cold water is running fine everywhere in the house..is this due to a frozen pipe or a boiler problem?..Any advice please?
  • It must be frozen on the individual branch pipe feeding that bathroom . You might find that it is in the roof close to the eaves, this is an area often affected . There is the tendency for a blast of cold air to enter the roof just under the narrow pitch where the roof joists angle down to the top of the external wall and any pipe dropping in this zone is difficult to properly lag and therefore vulnerable. I would find the stop valve which isolates this pipe and to unfreeze it try a hair dryer

  • sorted..follow the pipe from the boiler until it is cold to the touch..use a hair dryer to heat the affected areas..pour some hot water onto the vent pipe going outside the house (from the boiler).. RESULT: PIPING HOT WATER everywhere in the house:rotfl:

    phew...ew..

It must be expensive flushing your toilet with hot water :-)

No don't scoff - some people do feed theitr toilet cisterns with hot water to obviate condensation on the outside of the cistern which then drips all over the floor.
