What to know (Having a baby)

Just found out a few days ago that my partner is pregnant with our first baby.

I'm 23 and am currently recieving ESA whilst my partner is still at full time work and plans to be taking maternity leave.

We currently live away from each other at the moment but ideally we need this to change sharpish.

Am a bit confused as to how everything works as i currently still live with parents but me being on ESA i know i can get a place through housing benefit etc.... but where does it all stand with my partner being pregnant etc... and still working?

Are we able to get any help for the cost of buying a cot, push chair etc.... We basically have a bed, tv and computer for ourselves and that's it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Andy

What ESA (income or contributions based) are you? Do either of you have any other children?

  • Your best bet is to ring the Job centre help lines or go into your local JC.

They can assess your situation and tell you what you can and can't apply for.
Once baby is born, depending on what your partner earns or what you may be earning, you could be entitled to working tax credits and child tax credits. You can apply for a Sure start maternity grant 11 weeks before the baby is due if you meet certain criteria or up to three months after the baby is born if you meet the criteria then.

It's all dependant on your income and living arrangements as to who will get what in terms of benefits. I assume you'll be moving in together? If you are you can get things back dated if you have a good reason.

Best to ring benefits help line first so you know for sure!

Good luck with the baby! :)
