Cancelled Easyjet flight

I was booked to fly home from Liverpool to Belfast yesterday evening but due to fog the flight was cancelled. I managed to make my way to Birkenhead and booked a night ferry to Belfast and arrived in at 06.30!
Now while I understand that the fog is not within Easyjets control (!) I was wondering if I can claim back my alternative travel arrangements rather than claim a refund for the (cheaper) cancelled flight?
This website has an article on flight cancellations which states "When a flight is cancelled you have the right to either a refund or transportation to your destination as soon as possible." I am sure that many of the travellers who were on my cancelled flight are still waiting in Liverpool for a flight home.

Only if they arranged the alternative - or at least agreed to it in advance. By making your own arrangements your forfeited the option for anything other than a refund0
