CreditCard-insurance question

in Credit cards
Hi, We bought a Sat-Nav and childs car seat on a credit card, but within two weeks of purchase, not even paid for yet, the car it was in was destroyed by fire damage as my wife was driving to work- no other car/object involved.
The fire brigade have advised that due to the smoke damage and use of extinguishing materials that nothing in the car should be used again, we are chasing through the car insurance company but so far no real joy - its a company car so they are setting a total of £200 for everything in car - we totalled at least £1200!!
As the items were purchased on credit card, a couple of weeks before the car fire, do we, by any outside chance have a claim on the credit card company - I suspect not but just trying to cover all the bases.

I honestly dont see how,but could be wrong
the amount the company insures for is very low(to keep premiums low i suspect)0 -
You might be lucky. Some credit card companies offer free purchase protection which covers you for loss or damage for 90 or so days after purchase. You'd have to read up on your particular credit cards T&Cs to see a) if it's offered and b) what exclusions there are.
Which credit card did you use to buy the items, and how much were they?
EDIT: I've just checked a couple of my cards, and they both offer the cover, but one of the conditions is that the items must not be covered by any other insurance. Since your car insurance is looking to pay out this might be the stumbling block, because it seems they are covered by your car insurance, but just not to the value that you need them to be (but then I'm not an insurance expert).0 -
Does anyone know what uk based credit cards come with price protection, ie if the price drops within 60 days (or whatever set period) you can reclaim the difference?0

I know it used to be kicking around in a number of card T&C's but I never thought much of it. I would love to know if it is still about on any cards, I am going to try calling Amex as I read they may cover us and possibly mastercard!
For your info, definition of price protection:
Credit Card Price Protection
Most of us have experienced the frustration of buying something - perhaps after having spent weeks or months of saving - only to find the same item for significantly less in another store, or even worse, on sale a week later at the shop where we originally bought the item. The difference can sometimes be as much as hundreds of pounds.
Typically included within a credit card package and costing just a few pence a month,Price Protection Insurance from Assurant Solutions allows the consumer to claim back the difference between the original price paid and the reduced price, thus ensuring they do not miss out on getting a great deal.
Features and benefits
Our Price Protection Insurance covers most purchases of new personal items (including gifts) bought from any store in the UK.
Cover is usually provided as a complimentary offering within a credit card package and costs a few pence a month - or a small annual premium can be paid.- It covers purchases made using the relevant credit card;
- Cover is immediate, giving extra peace of mind to the consumer, knowing that their purchase is protected from day one in today's increasingly competitive retail environment;
- The consumer doesn't have to compare prices within the same chain of stores. If they find the item cheaper anywhere in the UK, they can claim;
- Claims can be made for a maximum of £500 per item;
- Claims can be made for up to 60 days following purchase of the item;
- A 30-day cooling off period allows the consumer to make sure the cover is right for them.
To be eligible for the product the shopper needs to be a customer of a credit card company that provides this cover.
Exclusions
The customer must always submit the claim first to the shop where they bought the item or the manufacturer if they offer a low price guarantee. Thereafter, the main exclusions include:- Price difference of less than £25;
- Items purchased at an auction or from Internet sites;
- Items that are not identical;
- PC or computer equipment and software;
- Incorrectly priced items or one-off/special order items;
- Goods bought in a sale.

its a company car so they are setting a total of £200 for everything in car - we totalled at least £1200!!
Is this because the insurance limit is £200 (and you therefore were carrying things uninsured) or are they being unfari and undervaluing your items.
It's worth checking on what basis this has been decided.
If it's the plicy limit, well then you chose to carry 6 times as much as you were insured for on teh car insurance.
Out of interest do you have "personal posessions" insurance on your home insurance.
This insures you for items whilst outside of the home.
This is an alternative route, but it is optional so you have to check your home cover.do we, by any outside chance have a claim on the credit card company
Not by law, but some card companies do have free insurance.
You'd have to check the card company or tell us their name.0 -

Yes - Egg Money for oneSounds like a complete load of tosh to me. Never heard of it....except the initials, PPI, which almost always actually refer to Payment Protection Insurance and is very different - usually covering you for changes in your circumstances which mean you cant pay your bill.
Good luck...
Not tosh - Egg Money offer it for 30 days after purchase.
"Price promise
Buy an item costing more than £50 and if you find it cheaper within a 30 mile radius, within 30 days of purchase, we'll refund the difference.
You can claim up to £375 per item and up to four items per year.
Internet purchases or items bought in a sale or as part of a promotion are not covered.
Zero excess."0 -
