First Credit Card at 18 - Which one?

in Credit cards
Hi All
I haven't had a credit card before since I've only turned 18 recently. I've had a debit card for years and am used to purchasing online and in shops by chip & pining. I read about the benefits from paying by CC (additional rights), as well as the offers that people with these cards can get (which, being cynical of me, some look like they're designed to tempt you into debt you can't afford - but if you're sensible some look pretty good).
Before anybody says anything, I know that people my age say "oh I'm 18, I'm getting a credit card, free money!!!!". They get these cards and ruin their credit history which affects them for decades, resulting in debt and misery. For that reason most people suggest avoiding them until you have a full time job etc. I am far too sensible for that, it would be a stupid thing to do. The ONLY reasons I want one are in the first paragraph.
Basically I want to know:
1) What card is best to get first in order to build a credit history from scratch? I have an HSBC debit card at the moment.
2) Do I need to go into debt (below 0) and pay back before the end of the month to build some history, or can I stay in green and get it?
3) On that note, do I need to borrow significant amounts every month to build a history?
Thanks :A
