Best way to bank $ cheques in the UK

My bank, NatWest, charges a bomb if I want to pay in a dollar cheque to my sterling account - not to mention the interesting conversion rate they appear to use.
So, can anyone recommend a different way of accepting these payments from the US ?
The cheques tend to be small denomination (they're US royalty payments from Amazon, who won't issue a sterling cheque for UK book sales in the USA - don't you just love them !!!)
Thanks to anyone who can help

You can also pay dollar cheques into a citibank stirling account without charge.

Auctionpix offer a cost effective way of accepting small value $US cheques

The exchange rate is not that good but the fee is peanuts - last time I looked (admittedly not recently) it was 95p per batch of cheques.0 -
