Urgent - Madeira advice pls!

Off to Madeira early hours of this Monday (23 October). Looking for any advice / hints & tips, especially on places to go / avoid; local customs (ie: do not want to cause offence, or show bad manners); ideas for 'traditional' gifts to take back to our families; prices re alcohol / cigarettes (to be taken back home) - in fact ANY information that you think might be of use.
