Another Travel Insurance Question

I booked two BA return flights to Orlando for travel in November via the net, unfortunately my father in law is very ill and looks likely to be for the next few weeks, therefore we do not want to travel during this time.

I do have an annual travel insurance policy with Atlas, however the renewal is due in the middle of our holiday (I had planned on renewing beforehand). Will be be covered if I have to cancel our flights, and what type of proof would the insurers require to prove how ill my F.I.L is?

Appreciate any advice.

You need to get insurance from the point the risk starts and this is when you booked the flight.

I don't honestly know how they will deal with this.
They might cover you for the outbound flight (which falls inside your current insurance) but not for the return (for which you have no insurance).
You would really have to ask them and see.
what type of proof would the insurers require to prove how ill my F.I.L is?

Written proof from doctors/consultants (they will probably obtain this directly).
I have recently made a claim. It was not medical but I saw what was on the form relating to a medical claim.
You have to give details and sign for permission for them to acces the medical records.
I would guess they do it directly to combat fraud i.e. you sending in stuff you've written yourself.
