Dominican Republic - currency options?

I'm going to the Dominican Republic next week and want some advice regarding taking cash.
Firstly, should I take Dominican pesos or USD (or just GBP)?
Secondly, shall I buy some cash here to take with me or get it out of an ATM when I'm there? I'll be in an all inclusive so hopefully won't need much - just for day trips etc.
I have a Nationwide debit & credit card and prepaid Neteller Mastercard. What would be the cheapest way to take cash out or pay for things when I'm there?

I went four years ago but speaking to someone who went last year it hasn't changed much.
You need some US$ to be able to pay the entrance tax. Departure tax is payable with pesos.
We took about US$250 on an all-inclusive which covered us for trips and excursions. Some trip providers (DON'T use your tour operator) will not accept anything but US$ so you will get a wider choice if you take them.
Otherwise, get pesos out of the cash machine as they are widely accepted everywhere.0 -
Hi There,
I went there about two years ago (lovely place) and just took USD, but when i paid with USD i would get the correct amount in pesos change.
Maybe take a mixture?0 -
domincans worship the dollar so they will always be greatefull if you pay in dollars rather than pesos however you will need them if you plan to get out and about, try "el publico's", its like a mini van bus you flag down for a few pesos, its a lot cheaper than the mad taxi prices they make up in resort.
also please dont take large amounts of cash out with you- i dont wish to worry you but i used to live in santo domingo and saw a tourist shot dead, and most people i knew owned a gun- be modest with what you have on show so no flashy gold watches etc. other than that though dominicans like to party hard and are very welcoming! enjoy and dont forget to try the 151!***MSE...My.Special.Escape***0 -
Thanks for all the replies - I forgot about the entrance tax. It sounds like it's $10 US in and $20 US out per person, so I better order some USD before I go.
If I take out pesos (or dollars, if that's possible) from an ATM while I'm there, will it be better to use my prepaid Neteller Mastercard or Nationwide debit or credit card? Which would have the lowest fees/best rate?0
