Hi all, I've just been involved in a minor accident where a hired car has gone into the side of me ! The driver who hit me was a young male and he said he doesnt want to go through insurance as he doesnt have any !
But I thought you couldnt hire a car without insurance - I suspect he doesnt want to pay a high excess and settle without insurers getting involved. I'd like to go through insurance though.
What would you suggest ? I go through insurance or get quotes probably cost around two hundred ?

depends on you at then end of the day. go and get two quotes and tell him the cost. Maybe add a few £££ on to cover your time then see what he says. If he wont pay speck to your insurance company and put a claim in via his. The hire company will have insurance so dont worry about that. What hire company was it????Filiss0

You mention that you'd like to go through the insurance. Do so.
It's your choice - he hit you. Unless you feel like doing him a favour, choose the method that suits you best.
The only advantage to you would be if you didn't want to notify your insurance company of the accident. At fault or not, your premium is likely to rise when you answer the "have you had any accidents or claims in the last x years". However, that would be wrong. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
Legally, you should tell your insurance company if anything happens.
Therefore, if you want to go through your insurance you should.0 -
The most likely situation here is that it isn't him who hired the car, and that's why he isn't insured.
You should demand his insurance details and report him to the police if he fails to provide them.
I trust that you already have genuine name and address details from him?0 -
You can go through your insurance company. If he soesnt want to claim through his then he can repay the insurance company directly0

Cheers all, it doesn't look like a big company, just some small local one.
One the paperwork he showed me it said the insurance is the persons own so when I asked him he said he hasn't got any.
Also his damage is probably a lot worse then mine will he not have to go through insurance to pay for his damage???2p off is still 2p off!0 -
Also am I 'screwed' if he doesn't have insurance or is it just in the hands of my insurance company (egg), I'm also a little paranoid that he won't pay if we don't go through insurance2p off is still 2p off!0

I've got his details but realised after he hasn't got mine, I did say to him I would think about it and let him know, should I as a common courtesy and then just let me insurance company take over?2p off is still 2p off!0

Thanks again all for your help and replies, just decided to go through insurance, they've advised me that they are showing that he does have some insurance and even if he doesn't there is likely to be some insurance on the car so somewhere they can claim from.2p off is still 2p off!0

indeed; plus if he's t-boned you, you never know what damage is done that you can't see.
and if he really, really had no insurance, I'd say screw him. He should not be on the road then, simple. In the United Kingdom 200,000 people are bitten by dogs every year and some people will die as a result. Of those bitten, 70% are children... So the question has to be asked....... Has the time come to ban children?0
