Transferring money abroad

I'm currently living in France and am here from a year. I have a nationwide account which has just started charging for everything overseas. I also now have a french bnp paribas account. I need to start transferring money across but am not sure of the best way to do this. I have been told nationwide will charge an arm and a leg. I looked into using paypal but you can't transfer to yourself. Is it worth getting a third party involved to use as a middle man? I only need to do a maximum 5 transfers.
Any help would be great.
