Something strange going on

I've just recieved a letter from Santander saying I owe them £156 so I log on to internet banking to find £138 of charges from being over-drawn. The thing that made me over drawn is 2 direct debits to paypal, one is around £10 and the other £8 both on the same day in august 2010.

I know I probably should have checked my account sooner but I the last time I used it was in May this year and I only opened it for the cashback.

Why would I be giving two payments to paypal? I've been through my paypal history and nothing like this has shown up. I thought maybe it could be selling fees for ebay but the only time I have ever sold something was AUG 2009 so that must have been paid ages ago and it wouldn't have cost £18 if the item was only £85?

This is an example of what it says:
DIRECT DEBIT PAYMENT TO PAYPAL PAYMENT REF ######## MANDATE NO ###

I don't know what that ref number is for

The first thing to do is check your paypal account, see if you have been hacked.

  • Nope I've been using it regularly recently and I've checked all transactions down to July 1st 2010 and nothing fishy has been going on.

When I first logged into my online bank account it did come up with an extra security question and said the account wasn't linked with this computer but that could be because I also use my dads laptop and when I went to log back in about 20 minutes later it said it again so i don't know if I trust that.
  • Figured it out
