Single accommodation in Edinburgh

I'm planning to spend a weekend in Edinburgh some time in December, travelling up on the Caledonian Sleeper train.
I have had a quick look at accommodation and have found that hotels tend to offer rooms for double occupancy, which work out rather expensive for one person. Using a guesthouse would obviously be a cheaper alternative, though, after a quick search, those advertised in the town centre (near the castle) don't look too appealing. That said, I do like the idea of a traditional B&B type accomodation... do these exist in the town centre?
Is there a better option for solo travellers? Anyone have any experience doing something similar? Any recommendations for specific places?

Depending when you want to go, maybe see if there are any free rooms in halls at the universities? I know they rent them out to tourists over the summer so it may be worth seeing if they do so over the Christmas break..."A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0

There are loads of B&Bs outwith the city center and the buses in Edinburgh are very frequent and reliable0

Lots of B and B's in Newington and can walk to town as well. 15min walk into town and masses of buses. You could also try a travel lodge although I think a B and B would be much nicer.2012 wins; ladybird trunki and ladybird books, three mascaras.
Sending you all the comping fairy dust in 2012 and sprinkling some on myself too:j0 -
OK thanks for the suggestions guys. I was only really considering the town centre before, but I'll have a better look at those available just outside too. Again, if anyone has stayed in particularly nice B&B (traditional style) then let me know!0
