bank mistaken identity!

My boyfriend received a letter from his bank on friday. It stated that he had given written permission for a citizens advice bureau at the other end of the country to collect all his bank account details for 4 accounts to sort out his debt.He would continue to accrue charges. They said that he should cancel all his direct debits immediatly as i presume the cab want to suspend his account but the bank have said they are not willing to do so at the moment.
The letter has all his 4 bank account details on it.This is not my boyfriends debt and they have clearly got him mixed up with someone else.
This info has been released by his bank, who have not checked that it is the right person, been given to the CAB,who have not checked and then correspondence must have gone back to the bank for this letter to be sent out.
He went to the bank saturday morning and they say they can do nothing until monday but how can a mistake like this happen.I am just hoping the CAB haven't given the guy who is in debt a printout of the bank details thinking they are his.
We are monitoring the accounts but this is very worrying.I asked for an address to complain but they said to wait until monday. The man at the bank did say it was very bizzare!
I dread to think what would have happened if he hadn't opened the letter straight away. How can someone miss details like this at both ends of the country! No money has been taken out yet but i hope the bank rings the collection center early on monday!

Looks like they did not check the signature on the authority to their signature database.
If what you have written is true then it is a breach of Data protection act BUT as no actual loss has occurred (as far as I can see) don't expect a lot of compensation - I would think £25 or so with an apology and an agreement that they will sort it out with the CAB.0 -
It is a breach,i'm not after compensation i want to get to the bottom of it and find out what has happened and why.
Still haven't heard from the bank.Hopefully they are sorting it now.0
